Candidate for Philadelphia's 7th Councilmanic District
Candidate for Philadelphia's 7th Councilmanic District
I grew up in the Kensington section of the 7th district, like most in the 7th I know what its like to live in extreme poverty and know the hardships of having to survive through the hopelessness of that struggle. I know what its like to have to live paycheck to paycheck, understanding that the belief is that nothing will change. I know what its like when you feel that being poor and having to survive is your lot in life, but I'm here to tell you otherwise, with collectivism, community and determination WE can change the direction of our district. Only WE can do this!!!!
I attended and graduated from Edison High School in 1999 a month after graduating I entered Active Duty Service in the U.S. Army. During my 13 years of active service I spent 3.5 years in active combat in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom and 2 years in Kitzingen Germany pre and post 9/11. As a standout while in Iraq I was promoted by the Department of the Army to Staff Sergeant in 2003 and then to Sergeant First Class in 2008 ahead of all peers. Before being medically retired I was an Instructor for the USAMPS (United States Army Military Police School) where I assisted in the writing and publication of MP tactical policy and training. After retirement I returned to Philly and became active in Kensington after seeing the need. After meeting activists in the community I began to grow food in "Las Parcelas" with "Voces del Barrio". That grew into working groups like ACT UP, Revolutionary Workers Collective, SOL Collective and many other Harm Reduction groups in the community to develop solutions that will save lives, curb gun violence, reduce open air drug use and end extreme poverty in the 7th district and in Philadelphia.
Notable Accomplishments:
Meritorious Service Medal
Bronze Star Medal
Army Accommodation Medal w/ Valor x2
Help us win this election so that we can get to work! Handing out flyers, phone banks, and donations are all great ways to help, but we also want to hear from you! Together, we will find the solutions so that our communities can lift itself out of poverty. Please, reach out and get involved!
You can count on the dedication of this community. There is always room for improvement, and I know we can support our district in the areas we are struggling with to include but not limited to a lack of significant work, job training and education. We will improve the quality of our district by finding homes for the unhoused, quality education for our children and neighborhoods that are thriving through job growth.
Young people are vital in the effort to change the trajectory of the 7th district. For many years the youth have had to live with trauma, poverty, a failing education system, dead-end jobs and with no hope in the future except to escape from Philadelphia so that their children wouldn't have to endure the things they did growing up. We need YOU to register to VOTE and make your voice heard. Lets make sure the 7th district changes for the better.
For the past 13 years the 7th district has dealt with having the poorest neighborhood in the top 10 US cities (Fairhill), dealing with the largest open air drug market (Kensington), school closings, lack of meaningful jobs, lack of affordable housing, police brutality, food deserts, a lack of green space and a complete failure by the city to ensure the safety and health of this community because its poor.
On November 7, 2023 you will have the power to change the structural dynamic in the 7th district. We have had to survive for so long that we have forgotten what its like to live. Join us! Be part of real change, be part of history! Be the people that save the 7th district and all of its neighborhoods.

I will introduce or support a Bill that bans the practice of 10 year tax abatements in the city of Philadelphia and puts control of the land in the hands of the community, which will prioritize investing tax dollars that are acquired through the elimination of abatements towards funding evidence-based educational programs and trade schools.

We want to make sure that the citizens of our district and Philadelphia receiving basic resources to include but not limited to food, showers, diapers, and any basic human need. Public health is ensuring our children have safe and clean streets, parks and neighborhoods. Finding real solutions to ending the Overdose crisis which claimed 2,000+ people in Kensington, Harrowgate and Fairhill over the past 4 years. Access to mental health resources is vital to the progress of the 7th district.

I support a Green New Deal for Philadelphia. Going green wouldn't just clean our air, it would also create thousands of jobs that would pay a living wage and offer residents in the city an opportunity to get technical training to install, replace and maintain future infrastructure in green energy technology. I will also fight for funding to upgrade public high schools in technical jobs that would be required to make Philadelphia the first Green city in the country. Creating Green jobs will bring much needed economic relief while prioritizing the citizens of the 7th district and for jobs that pay a living wage. We understand that by members of the community being able to find and keep substantial work will curb gun violence in the district.

Yes Philly is facing a housing crisis in poor communities due to high rent and the rise of property taxes. There is a substantial percentage of the black, brown and poor white communities who are struggling to secure some type of housing that they can afford. According to the PEW report, the cost burden is highest in some of the city’s lowest-income neighborhoods, where the housing stock is old and many units are in poor condition. And cost burden is more prevalent among Hispanics, at 50%, and Black residents, at 46%, than among Asians, at 33%, and non-Hispanic White residents, at 32%.”
I would make it easier for community members to purchase homes through PHA and improve the practice of providing housing that are affordable to everyone. Ending homelessness with transitional homes and job training for adults that ensure the upper mobility of members in the district. We know and will empower the community to have say in how things happen in the neighborhood, to include but not limited to what is built, zoning, taxes, abandoned homes, abandoned land public and/ or private.
